A native of Los Angeles, Hugh Kretschmer is an internationally acclaimed photographer known for his meticulously rendered, conceptual images. The majority of his work is done in-camera, with a fastidious sense of detail applied to designing and building lavish sets and props. He also uses elements of collage and assemblage, with minimal digital manipulation.
“The idea is the most important ingredient in my work” says Kretschmer. “I’ve always appreciated concept because it adds another layer to the illustration or photograph and invites participation from the viewer. When I see something that is done well, where the artist really nails it, I find myself just staring. I can’t think of anything else that would be more of a compliment than that. I come from a very creative family and was exposed to a lot of art throughout my life: Twentieth-century art, the Cubists, the Russian Avant-Garde, and Surrealism really influenced me.”
Hugh Kretschmer has received numerous awards from organizations including Communication Arts magazine, American Photography, International Photography Awards, Society of Publication Designers and Graphis Photo Annual.
His editorial clients include Esquire, GQ, New York Times Magazine, Health, Outside, Fast Company, Rolling Stone and Menís Journal.
